You may have heard that the first of the promised frequent updates for XE2 has already arrived. If, like me, your first instinct was to reach for the “Check for Updates” option in your XE2 installation you may then have been confused to be told there were no updates. That’s because you have to completely UNinstall and REinstall from scratch, as mentioned in the official announcement, along with download links.

I for one am a bit miffed that this “update” could not be delivered as an incremental patch. 2.3GB is a not insignificant portion of my download allowance from my NZ ISP (45GB from Vodafone), and I am paying for the highest data cap possible (even then I routinely have to pay extra for a “double your data” block).

Being forced to download a product installer in full not once but twice in one billing cycle is a serious impact on my data use.

I can only hope that not all of the subsequent “frequent” updates will be as inconsiderate to those not blessed to live in a country that provides limitless, cheap data over the inter-wires.

And I can only begin to imagine what someone who paid extra for the installation backup media is thinking, only to now find that that media is now relegated to use as a drinks coaster by this update, barely 1 month from initial release.

Let’s hope that when I find the time to remove and then reinstall XE2 the effort will prove worthwhile.

  1. This full uninstall/reinstall type update has happened once before with the first update for D2007 if I remember rightly. After the first update all subsequent updates were incremental.

It’s a real pain the **** because I’ve just recently installed my third party components into XE2 as well.

    1. @Lachlan: no worries mate! I had just installed my 3rd-party components into XE2 as well; but even after uninstalling and reinstalling, they were still there.

(Other than that: yay for old-fashioned wired broadband connections…)

  2. Oh yeah, in my office I use broadband wireless unlimited in regular but after 5GB the downstream is reduced to 384kbit this sucks:). Reminds me of the good old days – moving the hardware to the one Internet connection:). I will wait until spring. Monthly updates … I think the world somehow agreed on 2 a year.

  3. SInce there have been copyright issues I suppose they need to ensure that the original installation is wiped out. Or they simply do not want to distribute that package any more.

Lucky me, I was going to install XE2 pretty soon, but got distracted to real work and defragmenting the disk before the installation – which I still have not found the time to do…
